Showcase
This showcase is created to display the work I have done as part of the Master of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET) program. The artifacts that I chose to display are organized in three categories. Each category represents a topic that was of significant importance throughout the program. The categories are learning, and design thinking and problem solving, and technology.
Learning
As a teacher for many years I assumed at the outset of the masters courses that I had a great understanding of learning. I soon realized however that it's important to continuously explore the topic. We must update our understanding as research and technology bring change to the education universe.
Social Learning in ActionThe Teaching Via Demo lesson plan is an example of adapting old ideas to a more modern application using technology as a tool. Social experiments taught us that humans learn by watching those around them. When I apply the 4 Components of Social Learning to the creation of demo videos it makes them more useful to the students. |
Networked LearningThis artifact is a blog post that I wrote after completing a networked learning project. The blog post explains how I created a network of resources online to depend on as I learned a new skill. This type of learning puts the student in control and is an essential skill I desire to teach my students. |
Assessment Design ChecklistThe Assessment Design Checklist is a list of what I feel are the most imperative items that should be included in assessments to make them meaningful and useful as feedback. It is a thorough and purposeful list that uses evidence from research to provide clarity. |
Design Thinking & Problem Solving
Design Thinking was the big Aha moment of my grad studies. When I learned about the five components of Design Thinking (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test) I immediately saw a vast number of applications in education. It would be a great way to attack a Wicked problem which is a problem that is difficult or impossible to solve because of ever changing requirements that are difficult to recognize. There are a lot of Wicked Problems in education.
Solving Problems Through DesignUsing the components of Design Thinking I worked through each of the empathizing, defining, and ideating stages and created this prototype to solve a curriculum problem. It shows the thoughtful way that I observed and engaged with the students, then used that information to define the problem and create a possible solution. |
Problem of Practice ReportThe Stanford Design Model provides a systematic yet creative way to solve problems. It encourages collaboration and gathering input from as many sources as possible. This report describes the way I progressed through the modes of Design Thinking in a quest to solve a problem. |
Solving Wicked ProblemsWhen attacking a wicked problem it is important to spend a lot of time looking at it from every angle, collecting research from others who have worked on parts of the problem before you. This presentation displays my ability to identify a problem, conduct research, and find a solution in an organized manner. It also shows my problem-solving mindset. |
Technology
I chose technology as a category because it has been an integral part of my master's studies. Technology has the ability to change the whole landscape of education. However, we must give conscientious thought to where it can be of greatest benefit to learning and understanding within a content area. Using technology just because it is available isn't always beneficial to students.
21st Century LearningMy ability to create a 21st Century Lesson Plan is on display in this artifact. The lesson plan encourages students to work cooperatively and explore the world outside of their classroom for more comprehensive information. |
Online Course ModuleThe Art and Science of Baking is a website I designed as part of an online course management system for my classes. It displays my ability to use multiple applications in conjunction to create an attractive and effective learning tool. |
New Media Re-DesignNew media texts or tools are very helpful in adapting aged text to meet the needs of all learners. It allowed me to change this article to reduce cognitive load and make the information more accessible. New media allows for the addition of more visual representations, chunking of information, and even rearranging text to make it flow in a more cohesive way. |
